During the iconic song “One Day More,” members of Just Stop Oil stormed the stage at the Sondheim Theatre, brandishing banners with the words “Just Stop Oil.” The actors on stage managed to continue their performance, but eventually stepped back to allow the area to be cleared and the safety curtain to come down. The crowd’s reaction was a mixture of boos and confusion, while one member of the group addressed the auditorium.
Hannah Taylor, a member of Just Stop Oil, expressed her concerns about the future and the impact of oil and gas on global food security. She drew a parallel between the show’s protagonist, Jean Valjean, stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s starving child, and the potential future where people are forced to do the same. According to Taylor, the exploitation of new oil and gas reserves contributes to crop failure, starvation, and death, particularly in the global south. She described it as an act of war and a betrayal of young people.
Poppy Bliss, another protester, echoed similar sentiments, stating her fear for the future and the lack of choices she feels she has. She acknowledged the disruption caused by their actions but claimed that the government’s betrayal of the younger generation left them with no other recourse except to protest.
After locking themselves to the set, the protesters triggered the evacuation of the Sondheim Theatre. The Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and initiated necessary measures to manage the situation. The incident marked yet another notable protest by Just Stop Oil, who have previously targeted high-profile sporting events like The Ashes and Wimbledon. They have also organized walking protests during rush hour in the capital and were accused of criminal damage for spraying the Department for Energy and Net Zero with orange paint.
While protests are intended to raise awareness and spur action, it is essential to consider the broader consequences they may have. In this case, the disruption of a well-loved and long-running theater production undoubtedly angered many audience members who had paid for their tickets.
