Aerial footage taken by search and rescue helicopters reveals the extent of the damage, with soil covering the A83 between Tarbet and Lochgilphead, as well as affecting the A815. Several vehicles were left stranded, but thankfully no injuries have been reported so far. However, the situation remains critical as amber and yellow weather alerts remain in place until Sunday morning, with forecasters predicting a month’s worth of rain in a single day.
With heavy downpours causing flooding on roads nationwide, Police Scotland is advising drivers in Argyll and Bute not to travel at all. The region has been particularly affected by the extreme rainfall, and authorities are concerned about the safety of those traveling during the school holidays, especially families who may be camping. Rail services have also been disrupted and passengers in England are being urged to postpone their travel plans to Scotland. Where train services are still running, reduced speeds are in operation to ensure passenger safety.
Network Rail Scotland reported that their pumps in Clydebank had been overwhelmed by the heavy rain, causing water levels to rise to window level on a train. This further highlights the severity of the flooding situation in Scotland. The mainline between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street had to be temporarily closed, but engineers have now deemed it safe for services to resume. Nevertheless, the impact on transportation and infrastructure remains a significant concern.
The extreme weather has also disrupted various sporting events across Scotland. The third round of the Alfred Dunhill Links golf championship at St Andrews had to be postponed until Sunday. Additionally, Dundee’s Scottish Premiership game with Ross County was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, mirroring the situation faced by other football matches in the country. Scottish authorities are issuing warnings of the potential consequences of the heavy rainfall. Up to 180mm (8in) of rain has been forecasted for parts of the Highlands, which is described as a “major rainfall event.” Ruth Ellis, flood duty manager for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), has expressed concerns about extensive river and surface water flooding, as well as property damage and disruption to infrastructure. SEPA currently has 17 flood alerts and 53 flood warnings in force.

South East England can expect temperatures to reach a remarkable 24C (75F) on Saturday and 25C (77F) on Sunday. This unusual weather for October is not limited to the South East, as the Midlands and Wales will also bask in sunny conditions throughout the weekend. The Met Office predicts a continuation of dry and warm weather in the southern half of the country, with slightly more cloud cover and hazy sunshine on Sunday.
