Kim Jong Un Inspects Russian Military Technology: A Controversial Move

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia took an unexpected turn as he inspected Russian nuclear-capable strategic bombers, hypersonic missiles, and warships. Accompanied by President Vladimir Putin’s defense minister, Kim’s visit has raised concerns among the international community. The encounter at the Knevichi airfield, just outside the Pacific city of Vladivostok, was filled with striking images and statements that have left many questioning the motives behind this visit.

As Kim Jong Un arrived at the airfield, he was greeted by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who saluted the North Korean leader. Looking somewhat pleased, Kim proceeded to inspect a guard of honor before being shown Russia’s strategic bombers – the Tu-160, Tu-95, and Tu-22M3. These strategic bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons and are a crucial component of Russia’s nuclear air attack force. Shoigu informed Kim that one aircraft could fly from Moscow to Japan and back. This revelation undoubtedly piqued Kim’s interest, as he was seen nodding and smiling throughout the demonstration.

The North Korean leader’s interest in Russian military technology continued as he was shown the MiG-31I supersonic interceptor aircraft equipped with “Kinzhal” hypersonic missiles. The Kinzhal, also known as “dagger,” is an air-launched ballistic missile with a range of 1,500 to 2,000 km. Capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads, this missile can travel at speeds up to 10 times the speed of sound. As Kim delved into the intricacies of launching these missiles, his curiosity was evident. However, the purpose behind his interest remains a subject of concern for countries like the United States and South Korea.

After exploring the aircraft and missiles, Kim Jong Un turned his attention to the warship of Russia’s Pacific fleet in Vladivostok. He was scheduled to witness a naval demonstration, emphasizing Russia’s military capabilities. This display surely raised eyebrows in countries that are skeptical of North Korea and its collaboration with Russia. The United States and South Korea wasted no time in voicing their concerns, claiming that the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea violated U.N. sanctions.

Russia’s eagerness to publicize Kim’s visit, as well as its hints at potential military cooperation with North Korea, have perplexed many observers. The relationship between the two countries dates back to 1948 when North Korea was formed under the Soviet Union’s guidance. For President Putin, who believes he is engaged in an existential battle with the West over Ukraine, embracing Kim allows him to challenge Washington and its Asian allies while potentially securing additional artillery for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, it is important to note that Washington has accused North Korea of providing arms to Russia, but the extent of these alleged deliveries remains unclear.

Following his visit to the Russian fighter jet factory, which is under Western sanctions, Kim Jong Un engaged in discussions with President Putin. The talks covered various military matters, including the war in Ukraine, and focused on further deepening cooperation between the two nations. While Russia assured the international community that they had no intention of violating any agreements, the visit itself sent shockwaves across the world. Russian diplomats openly criticized Washington, arguing that the United States had no right to lecture Moscow, especially considering recent actions such as the visit of a U.S. nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine to South Korea in July.

Kim Jong Un’s inspection of Russian military technology has ignited controversy and concern. The close examination of nuclear-capable strategic bombers and hypersonic missiles, along with the prospect of military cooperation, raises questions about the potential ramifications for global security. As the international community grapples with these developments, it is crucial to maintain vigilance and examine this visit from all angles to better understand the implications for regional and international stability.
