Fast Charlie, an adaptation of Victor Gischler’s novel Gun Monkeys, may not be the most elegant film out there, but it definitely leaves a lasting impression. This down-home Southern gangster yarn is filled with a staggering body count and gruesome scenes that will make your stomach churn. However, amidst all the bloodshed, there is a surprisingly sweet undertone, as an appealing May-December romance blossoms. While James Caan’s final film will grab the attention of genre fans, it may find a more appreciative audience at home rather than in theaters.
Charlie Swift, portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, is a seasoned gangster who commands respect. Yet, in the bayou country of Louisiana, he finds himself surrounded by wannabe bad guys who underestimate his skills. Young hot-shot punks think they’re better than Charlie, but he knows the score better than anyone. The film sets the tone from the beginning, as the first victim meets a grisly end. Director Phillip Noyce manages to sustain the darkly seriocomic atmosphere throughout, regardless of how grotesque or perverse the situations become.
Charlie dreams of retiring to Italy and leaving his life of crime behind. However, as fate would have it, he becomes entangled in a tricky situation when he inadvertently kills the husband of bereaved widow Marcie (played by Morena Baccarin). The plot predicament may seem preposterous on the surface, but the entire screenplay by Richard Wenk embraces the unlikely and extreme. It forces the audience to either embrace the film’s outrageousness as fun or dismiss it as foolishness.
