Lawmakers engaged in a heated debate during a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing, discussing the safety and effectiveness of gender-affirming care for minors. Republicans strongly condemned this medical practice, labeling it as “mutilation,” while Democrats argued in favor of its safety and effectiveness, citing support from various medical groups.
Republicans, led by Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Mike Johnson, opened the hearing with a video clip showcasing surgeons discussing the procedures of vaginoplasties and phalloplasties. Johnson vehemently stated that these procedures constituted “the mutilation of children,” and he called for legal prohibitions against them. Rep. Harriet Hageman further compared gender-affirming care to the infamous Tuskegee experiment, highlighting concerns over irreversible sterilization and long-term medical complications.
Democrats, including Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, countered Republican arguments by emphasizing the safety and effectiveness of gender-affirming care, particularly for the mental health and well-being of transgender youth. Scanlon criticized the notion that politicians are more qualified than leading medical organizations to judge the value and necessity of such care. She underlined the support of reputable medical associations, including the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Medical Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics.
Scanlon also admonished Republicans for utilizing right-wing talking points that delegitimize critical healthcare. She stressed the significance of words, highlighting how the language used by Republicans contributes to discrimination and violence against transgender children and their families. Ranking member of the full Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the heightened vulnerability and mental health struggles experienced by transgender youth, particularly due to the onslaught of anti-transgender legislation being passed at the state level.
During the hearing, two individuals shared their stories: a parent of a transgender child and a “detransitioner” (someone who transitioned from their sex at birth and then transitioned back). Myriam Reynolds, a licensed professional counselor and mother of a transgender child, spoke about her son’s gender-affirming care journey. Reynolds expressed gratitude for the comprehensive program that her family found, involving a multidisciplinary care team. However, she clarified that she does not support surgery for her son at this stage but stressed the life-saving impact of the healthcare accessed.
On the other hand, Chloe Cole, a “detransitioner” and advocate, shared a contrasting perspective. Cole recounted being fast-tracked onto puberty blockers and testosterone at a young age, leading to irreversible physical changes. Cole expressed regret and emphasized feeling like a “monster” due to the transition process.
Expert Insights and Closing Remarks
Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, defended the majority of young people who receive gender-affirming care, emphasizing that they undergo careful assessment and truly require these treatments. Minter highlighted that 98% of young people who receive treatment continue to do so into adulthood, indicating the long-term need for gender-affirming care.
The hearing came to a close with lawmakers still divided over the issue. As the debate rages on, it remains crucial to continue evaluating and balancing the safety and effectiveness of gender-affirming care for minors, considering the perspectives of medical professionals, affected individuals, and the overall well-being of transgender youth.
