North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum Discusses His 2024 Presidential Platform

North Dakota governor and Republican presidential candidate, Doug Burgum, recently appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to discuss his platform for the 2024 election. Burgum, who launched his campaign on June 7, has faced challenges in gaining recognition among voters, as he currently holds less than one percent in the polls, according to aggregated polling from RealClear Politics. In fact, a recent Quinnipiac University poll revealed that 90% of voters are not familiar enough with Burgum to form an opinion about him.

A Focus on Limited Government and Key Issues

Burgum’s campaign revolves around the principles of limited government and addressing critical issues such as the U.S. economy, energy policy, and national security. He emphasizes that his focus is not on engaging in “every culture war topic” but rather on finding solutions to enhance the country’s overall well-being. Burgum firmly believes that certain issues, such as abortion, transgender bills, and library book selections, should be left to the states to decide, and they should not be the primary areas where the president devotes their time.

During the interview, Burgum made it clear that he would not support a federal abortion ban and believes that this decision should be within the jurisdiction of individual states. He also expressed his support for the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on affirmative action, which declared race-based considerations in college admissions as unconstitutional. However, when pressed further, Burgum acknowledged that the exception made for military service academies “may not” be logical.

Burgum faces tough competition from 11 other Republican presidential candidates, including the frontrunner and former president, Donald Trump. In the interview, Burgum made it clear that he would not associate himself with Trump, stating, “You’re judged by the company you keep.” However, he did mention that he would be open to partnering with Elon Musk, citing Musk’s impressive track record in the business world.

Another significant aspect of Burgum’s platform is his stance on China. He firmly believes that the United States is currently engaged in a “cold war” with China, despite the country’s reluctance to admit it. This viewpoint comes in the wake of recent visits to China by several U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. These visits have aimed to stabilize relations between the two countries and address concerns regarding potential restrictions on U.S. investments in China.

Doug Burgum, the governor of North Dakota and a Republican presidential candidate for 2024, is striving to gain recognition among voters. He emphasizes his commitment to limited government and focuses on critical issues such as the U.S. economy, energy policy, and national security. Burgum believes that certain matters, including abortion and transgender rights, should be left to the states to decide. He distances himself from Donald Trump but expresses openness to collaborating with Elon Musk. Additionally, Burgum asserts that the United States is engaged in a “cold war” with China, despite the lack of official acknowledgement.
