Inter Miami CF Held to Scoreless Draw in First Home Game with Lionel Messi

Inter Miami CF extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games in their first home Major League Soccer match since the arrival of Lionel Messi. However, the team was held scoreless and dropped two crucial points in a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nashville SC.

A Rare Off Night for Messi

Messi, known for his remarkable performance on the field, had an off night – by his own standards. He failed to contribute with a goal or an assist for the first time since joining Inter Miami. Despite this, he led all players with seven shots and had a golden opportunity to win the game with seconds left. However, Nashville keeper Elliot Panicco denied Messi’s shot with his weaker right foot, showcasing impressive skill and determination.

This draw marked the first time Miami was held scoreless since Messi’s arrival and hindered their chances of reaching the MLS playoffs.

With Nashville’s key players not making the trip, it was clear from the start that their game plan was to keep as many players behind the ball as possible. This tactic frustrated the Miami players and coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino throughout the game. Martino expressed his disappointment in the post-match interview about the lack of time he has had to work with the team due to the compressed schedule since taking over.

Playing every four days has limited their training time, hindering their ability to build a cohesive group. Martino emphasized the importance of more training time to improve their performance as a team.

Struggles to Break Through Nashville’s Defense

Miami struggled to break through Nashville’s defense during the first 60 minutes of the game, resulting in no shots on goal. Messi attempted a free kick in the 60th minute but was unable to convert it into a goal. The Inter Miami fans, hopeful for another Messi magic moment, recorded the free kick in anticipation of a spectacular goal similar to his debut performance.

Nashville’s Hany Mukhtar had a goal disallowed in the 69th minute due to an offside call, adding to Miami’s frustrations. Messi had another chance in the 83rd minute, but his shot was blocked by a wall of defenders.

The draw leaves Miami with 22 points and 10 games left to play, putting them 10 points behind the final playoff spot currently occupied by the Chicago Fire. The upcoming match against the defending MLS Cup champions LAFC poses another challenging task for Messi and his teammates.

Following this game, Miami will have their longest break in over a month before their next match against a struggling Sporting Kansas City side. Unfortunately, due to international call-ups, Miami will be without Messi and up to 10 other players for that game.

Celebrating the Leagues Cup Victory

Before the draw, Inter Miami proudly displayed their newly-acquired Leagues Cup trophy to their home fans. Co-owner Jorge Mas expressed his elation at the club winning their first title. The trophy was raised by Messi and previous captain DeAndre Yedlin, gaining recognition from all sides of DRV PNK.

Looking Ahead

Despite the missed opportunities and frustrations of the draw, Inter Miami CF remains focused on their goal of reaching the MLS playoffs. With time, training, and the talent of Lionel Messi, they aim to secure victories in their upcoming matches and close the gap on the playoff spots. The presence of Messi has undoubtedly added a new level of excitement and expectations to the team, and it is clear that Miami is eager to see more of his magic on the field.
