Google has recently introduced a new alert system for Android smartphones in India, aimed at delivering early warnings in the event of an earthquake. This Android Earthquake Alerts System utilizes the sensors present on Android smartphones to detect earthquakes and estimate their severity. In collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Google has designed this feature to provide automated early warning alerts to Indian Android users during earthquakes in their respective areas.
The earthquake alert system developed by Google leverages the accelerometers present inside smartphones, effectively turning them into “mini seismometers.” When a phone is plugged in and charging, it can detect the initial vibrations of earthquake shaking. By analyzing data from multiple phones detecting similar shaking, Google’s servers can estimate the occurrence of an earthquake, as well as its epicenter and magnitude. This information is then pushed out as alerts to phones in the affected area.
As internet signals travel much faster than earthquakes, users will receive quick alerts on their phones before severe shaking begins. Google confirms that the earthquake alerts will also be available in Indian languages supported by Android, making the system accessible to a wider audience. Users can simply search “earthquake near me” on Google Search if they feel the ground shaking in their area, providing them with additional information about the natural event.
Google sends out two different types of alerts in the event of an earthquake: the Be Aware alert and the Take Action alert. These alerts are specifically triggered for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater. The Be Aware alert serves as a warning for light shaking and provides additional information when the user taps on the notification. This alert respects the volume, Do Not Disturb (DND), and notification settings of the user’s phone. On the other hand, the Take Action alert is designed to warn users before they experience moderate to heavy shaking. This alert overrides the DND settings, turns on the screen, and plays a loud noise to ensure user attention.
To receive these earthquake alerts, users must have a smartphone running Android 5 or later, with either Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity. Additionally, users should enable both Android Earthquake Alerts and location settings on their smartphones. Google plans to roll out this new alert system to all eligible Android users in India throughout the week.
