Former President Donald Trump finds himself in a multi-front battle, fighting prosecutors and Republican primary candidates alike. However, one opponent stands out from the rest: the political network funded by billionaire industrialist Charles Koch. With a war chest of over $70 million, mostly from Koch Industries, the super PAC Americans for Prosperity Action is launching a campaign against Trump for the 2024 election. This clash between Trump and Koch represents another intriguing chapter in their complex relationship.
The theme of Americans for Prosperity Action’s ads is straightforward: Trump cannot win, and his candidacy will ensure President Joe Biden’s re-election. These ads have prompted Trump to add the Koch network to his ever-growing list of enemies. Trump accuses “the special interests, the globalists, the Koch brothers” of conspiring against his movement. Additionally, the Trump campaign wrongly accused Koch-backed groups of supporting his primary opponent, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. However, neither the Koch network nor the Club for Growth has actually endorsed a Republican primary candidate.
A Misleading Reference
In his rhetoric, Trump often refers to the Koch brothers, but he fails to acknowledge that David Koch, Charles’ brother and political partner, passed away in 2019. Despite this misleading reference, Trump’s closest surrogates are actively echoing his criticism of Koch. Ohio GOP Sen. J.D. Vance, one of Trump’s endorsers, claims that the Koch network hates Trump because they detest his agenda. According to Vance, a Trump victory in the general election could serve as a reset for the Republican Party. This narrative resonates within Trump’s world, as expressed by his son, Donald Trump, Jr., who commended Vance for “ripping the globalist Koch Network” on social media.
Trump is not the only one fixated on the Koch network. Former Trump White House advisor Peter Navarro took a shot at former Vice President Mike Pence, citing Pence’s ties to the network as a reason for his discontent. Pence is currently competing against Trump in the Republican primary for president. Despite a recent New York Times poll showing Pence tied for third place at a mere 3%, Trump maintains his significant lead with 54% of likely voters.
While various critics have launched attacks on the Koch network, none have come close to the intensity of Trump’s rhetorical onslaught. On August 4th, Trump posted a message on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!” This post immediately sparked a debate about whether it might constitute a threat against potential witnesses in Trump’s ongoing legal cases. Prosecutors in one such case cited the Truth Social post in a court filing, requesting restrictions on what Trump could reveal publicly. However, Trump’s campaign vehemently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the post as merely a warning shot and not a genuine threat.
The True Targets: Koch’s Network
Trump’s campaign responded to the controversy by clarifying that the post was directed at “the RINO, China-loving, dishonest special interest groups and Super PACs, like the ones funded by the Koch brothers and the Club for No Growth.” By labeling them as dishonest and accusing them of having a pro-China stance, Trump seeks to rally his supporters against the Koch network. When asked for comment regarding the Koch network’s campaign against the former president, a Trump campaign spokesman redirected CNBC to Trump’s posts on Truth Social. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity did not provide a response.
The battle between Donald Trump and the Koch network exposes the underlying power struggle within the Republican Party. The Koch network’s decision to fund a campaign against Trump for the 2024 election demonstrates a significant rupture in their alliance. However, Trump’s forceful rhetoric and relentless attacks against the network indicate his determination to prevail.
